During the final years of his 38 years of career, he served as Secretary to Government of India in the Ministry of Coal where he handled the aftermath of the coal scam. As Additional Secretary in the Cabinet Secretariat, he headed the Project Monitoring Group (PMG) specially created to fast track projects that had an investment of Rs 1000 crore or more. During his 15 month stint, the Group facilitated clearances of 180 projects that entailed an investment of around Rs. 5 lakh crore.
